Garden Writer & Dog-Friendly Outdoor Space Specialist

20+ Years of Experience with Gardens & Outdoor Spaces
Adam Smith is the founder and lead writer of Life’s 101. With more than 20 years of experience with gardens and outdoor spaces, he focuses on practical solutions for creating gardens that work better for both people and dogs.
His work combines hands-on gardening experience with research into dog-friendly outdoor design, common backyard problems, gardening practices, and pet-safety considerations.
Why Dog-Friendly Gardens?
Additionally, Adam’s interest in dog-friendly garden design grew from his own experience of maintaining a garden with an active dog.
After watching his dog repeatedly run through the same part of the yard—wearing down the lawn and damaging plants—Adam initially tried the obvious solutions: repairing the lawn, replacing plants, and keeping the dog away from the area.
The problem kept coming back.
That experience led him to consider a different approach: rather than designing a garden first and trying to prevent the dog from using it, the garden could be planned around the way a dog naturally moves, plays, explores, and uses the space.
That change in perspective became a lasting interest and eventually led to Life’s 101.
Experience
Adam has more than two decades of experience with gardens and outdoor spaces.
Over the years, he has focused on understanding practical gardening challenges and finding solutions that work in real-world conditions.
His experience includes thinking through issues such as lawn damage, digging, high-traffic areas, garden boundaries, planting areas, outdoor maintenance, and the challenges of creating spaces that can withstand everyday life with dogs.
Rather than looking for a single solution that works for everyone, Adam focuses on understanding the underlying problem and considering the options available to each homeowner.

His Approach to Content
Adam believes good gardening advice should be useful outside the screen.
A recommendation should make sense for a real home, a real garden, and a real dog.
For that reason, Life’s 101 articles aim to explain the reasoning behind a recommendation—not simply provide a list of instructions.
When additional expertise is required, particularly for veterinary or animal-health topics, Life’s 101 uses appropriate professional sources and follows its veterinary review standards.
Adam’s expertise is in gardens and outdoor spaces. He does not present himself as a veterinarian or another licensed professional.

A Note From Adam
“A dog-friendly garden doesn’t have to look like a dog park, and a beautiful garden doesn’t have to be off-limits to your dog. With thoughtful planning, the two can work together.”
That idea remains at the heart of Life’s 101.
